» Posted by Leanne on 06 December, 2008 | 1 Comments

This is from quite an old article, but since i just found it now, i thought i'd post it anyway. TV spies are saying that there could soon be another lesbian character on TV, if Esther Anderson's character turns gay next year. Here's the short article:

Move over Ruby Rose, Confidential hears there's about to be another lesbian on the loose on Aussie TV.

Insiders on the set of Home & Away have hinted Esther Anderson's character, policewoman Charlie Buxton, could come out next year.

Kate's New Role Is A Long Way From Sally

Kate Ritchie has left former Home and Away character Sally Fletcher a long way behind in her new role on the much-anticipated TV show Underbelly.

Ritchie, 30, plays Judi Kane, the wife of slain 1970s standover man Les Kane. "It's certainly going to be a stretch and a challenge to me," Ritchie said. "I don't think I purposefully set out to find something that would distance me from Sally and Home and Away.
"In my heart I don't want to do that.

"It's important to be seen in a different light, but I also didn't want to be seen to be trying to go out and shock people."

Underbelly – A Tale of Two Cities follows the Australian criminal landscape that changed forever in the mid-1970s when the illegal drug industry took hold.

The series tells the story of two of the biggest crooks of the era Robert Trimbole (played by Roy Billing) and Terry "Mr Asia" Clark (Matt Newton). It will also follow the expansion of the drug trade in Australia from the 1970s to the mid-1980s.

The cast and crew are filming in Sydney and Melbourne until March.

The series has a strong Adelaide connection, with McLeod's Daughters star Dustin Clare playing hitman Christopher Flannery, and his former McLeod's castmates Myles Pollard and Matt Passmore playing police officers.

Adelaide bloke Damon Gameau plays Andy Maher, a Scottish heroin courier, in the Nine Network series.

Are Aussie Soaps Too White?

Aussie Soaps 'Too White'
Source - The Daily Telegraph, 15th November 08

Television producers have been accused of operating a "White Australia" policy when it comes to casting actors for top-rated soap operas.

Neighbours and Home and Away have been branded racist for consistently failing to feature families from ethnic minorities.

Now academics and politicians fear that international viewers could get the "wrong impression" about Australia.

University of Queensland Aboriginal studies lecturer Sam Watson said the dramas were operating an "exclusive white family club" that didn't reflect Australia's true demographic.

"The producers and directors of these shows are very sadly harking back to the White Australia policy of the '40s and '50s," he said. "Instead of embracing the rich diversities of our country, they are shunning it."

In contrast, British soaps such as EastEnders and Coronation Street, and New Zealand's Shortland Street have been successfully casting actors from ethnic minorities for years.

It's a huge concern for actors' union the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, which will discuss the problems at a conference in Sydney next month.
